presents His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
May 6, 2009, Albany, New York

Many Americans are living through a time of stress and instability. But in these times of uncertainty, we can also find opportunity - a chance for us to overcome our differences and, guided by compassion and respect, come together to find peaceful solutions. It is at this significant moment that a wise, compassionate world leader is making his first visit to Albany, New York.

The World Ethical Foundations Consortium is proud to host a public talk by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on May 6 at Albany's Palace Theatre. His Holiness, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is recognized worldwide for his promotion of human rights. In 2007, the U.S. Congress gave him the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award Congress can give to civilians.

We hope His Holiness' address titled "Compassionate Ethics in Difficult Times" will encourage all of us to developing ethical principles based on compassion that will ultimately fuel our desire to work together to expand humanitarian efforts throughout the world.

In previous addresses, His Holiness has described compassion as a fundamental human quality:

True compassion is universal in scope. It is accompanied by a feeling of responsibility. To act altruistically, concerned only for the welfare of others, with no selfish or ulterior motives, is to affirm a sense of universal responsibility.

Inaugural Event
April 15-20, 2009, Albany, New York

In April 2009, more than 100 people gathered in Albany, New York with a bold mission: explore three injustices affecting our world and use that knowledge to develop tangible, actionable solutions.

The event marked the first formal gathering of the World Ethical Foundations Consortium, a non-profit initiative of the Ethical Humanitarian Foundation, whose mission is to bring together a committed group of visionaries and enable them to work together in expanding humanitarian efforts around the world.

Participants focused on three ambitious and timely arenas:

  • Women and Social Icons
  • Human Honor and the Science of Media
  • Mexico: Oppression and Violence
